Floating house 77

“I Was 16 Years Old In This Photo, Which Was Taken At The Van Leo Studio In Emad Eddin St. I'm The Eldest Among My Siblings, but I Got Married Young. Back Then, There Was No Such Thing As Falling In Love. I Got Engaged Twice My First Fiance Passed Away. Throughout My Marriage, My Husband And I Lived In Zamalek. We Never Had Kids, So When He Passed Away, I Stayed In This Floating House On My Own.

I Have Several Animal Companions; A Cat Called Boussey, A Dog Called Lola, Goose, And I Have Birds. I Never Feel Lonely With Them Around. The Floating House Is Warm In Winter And The Temperature Is Nice In Summer; It's Not Like What People Think.”

I met Mrs. Ekhlas in January 2019. Her floating house and Thirty wooden houseboats were removed in 2022. The brightly painted wooden houseboats along the River Nile were part of Cairo's cultural and architectural heritage since the 1800s. They were removed to develop the waterfront commercially.
